The Crone Defined

Let’s talk about the word Crone shall we?
This, in total, is the definition of Crone, according to Merriam-Webster:
crone
noun
a cruel or ugly old woman

Wikipedia offers a bit more:
In folklore, a crone is an old woman who may be characterized as disagreeable, malicious, or sinister in manner, often with magical or supernatural associations that can make her either helpful or obstructive. The Crone is also an archetypal figure, a Wise Woman.

The only question we really care about your answer to is, “Are you happy? Like, deep down in the belly happy? Like, a glint in your eyes happy? Like, happy in all the cells of your being? Like, wearing a mischievous grin, laughing out loud, happy?

Author, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola-Estes defines the Crone as:
She is the most dangerous, the most radical, the most revolutionary woman in existence. Whether in fairy tales or in consensual reality, the old one goes where she wants to and she acts as she wishes; she lives as she chooses. And this is all as it should be. And no one can stop her. Nor ought they try.

Harvard Professor of Feminist Theology, and Author Mary Daly wrote:
n: Great Hag of History, long-lasting one; Survivor of the perpetual witchcraze of patriarchy, whose status is determined not merely by chronological age, but by Crone-logical considerations,; one who has Survived early stages of the Otherworld Journey and who therefore has Di-covered depths of Courage, Strength, and Wisdome in her Self.

I find it so interesting when women–sometimes older than me–recoil at the word “Crone.” Perhaps, it’s because I was exposed to writers, thinkers, Priestesses and Teachers who understood that most insulting slang has fear at their core. Most insults against women have misogyny at their core.

Internalizing the misogynist and ageist messaging/waters we’re all swimming in is inevitable. Our goal is to heal from that messaging, take back language, and love ourselves deeply whether we’re maidens, mothers or crones.

I’m deeply interested in words, how they’re defined by dictionaries, how they’re actually used in our culture, and how they impact us when we hear or use them to describe ourselves. As a Priestess, I understand that words have power–the power to uplift or degrade us. When we use them to define ourselves negatively, we are casting negative enchantments upon our selves.

A regular feature of this blog, will be to dig below the surface of language to find out what’s underneath the common, “harmless,” parlance.

In The Conspiracy, I’ll take this Wyrrd Weaving deeper–and even ask members to do a little word-sleuthing themselves.

It’s worth reminding readers that Big Crone Energy is energy. It is a flavor, a scent, a color, a power . . . and is always accessible, no matter our chronological age.
